 Essay on Environmental Protection

In simple words, 'environment' means our surroundings; the air, water and land around us. For centuries, man has been polluting the environment in different ways. In cities, vehicles daily emit poisonous gases into the air. Industries dump chemical wastes into lakes and rivers all the while.

Trees and forests are cut, and buildings and shopping complexes are built. Animals are killed, disturbing the eco-system. And of course, noise resulting from traffic and loudspeakers during the various festivals, disturbs us tremendously.

Environmental pollution of any kind adversely affects public health and makes the locality unsafe for living. We cannot forget the Bhopal Gas Tragedy of 1984, when a leak of poisonous gas from the Union Carbide plant killed over 2000 people in the city and left over 2 lakh permanently maimed or handicapped.

We regularly see thousands of fishes lying dead on our shores because of pollution due to oil spillage. People in urban areas generally suffer from respiratory diseases due to air pollution. The time has come when we must think very seriously about protecting our environment and controlling pollution.

Noise pollution is perhaps the easiest one to control, and new laws to control it have come into force. One very modern method of controlling pollution is recycling waste matter. Cans, paper and cloth can be reused.

Unleaded petrol is preferred, as lead is a major pollutant. The 'Pollution Under Control (PUC) checks in major cities try to keep vehicular pollution under control. Private industries, housing complexes and Municipalities are encouraged to plant more and more trees.

Farmers can be encouraged to use natural fertilizers and pesticides instead of chemical ones. The most important thing that can be done is to make the public aware about the need to control pollution and to protect the environment. This can be done by the mass media-the newspapers, radio, TV and magazines.

Organizations such as Greenpeace have been doing a lot of work in this area. However, much more needs to be done to check pollution, and it has to be started immediately and on a war footing, if we and our future generations are to live in a clean, healthy environment.
