Essay on “ Future of Democracy in India

Essay on “ Future of Democracy in India

Democracy anywhere is the ideal way of administration. India accopted this way of administration since its independence in 1947. In 1947, a care taking government was established and a constituent assembly came into existence under presidentship of then Indian President, Dr. Rajendra Prasad.

This assembly shaped Indian constitution and held 1st democratic elections for the republic of India in 1952. Democratic government is the government by the people for the people of the people as defined by Mr. Abraham Linkan.

Indian democracy fully fits in this definition. Since 1952 Indians are choosing its rulers by casting votes as per constitution. India is biggest democratic country in the world. Democracy rests on 4 pillars. They are (1) Parliament, (2) Administrative chain, (3) Independent Judiciary, (4) Free press. If these pillars are strong then only democracy can survive and can maintain health.

In democratic way of life every citizen above 18 years of age has a right to vote to the person or a party of his choice. Elected candidates then form government at respective levels right from a small village to a state or central levels.

Democracy does not only provide rights to the citizens but it also expects certain responsibilities. Unfortunately majority of us are very cautious about rights but do not wish to shoulder the responsibility that democracy demands.

This is not a good picture, certainly not for healthy administration. Our democracy shows certain malignant erosions like illiteracy, corruption, selfish motives, power of money and muscles, poverty etc. These odds have made the picture malign.

Hence its very difficult to foresee the very survival of democracy in India. We have to strive hard to sustain our democracy. Politicians should consider power and the system for the benefit of the society. Long Live Democracy.
