SCENE AT THE RAILWAY STATION

The scene at a railway station is very interesting. But I saw a totally different scene the other day. It was a stormy night. Rain was coming in torrents. The light had failed. There was darkness everywhere on the platform. My mother was coming by Toofan Express. The train was due to arrive at 2 a.m. So I reached the railway station an hour earlier.

There was nobody at the platform at that time. The bookstall was closed. No vendor could be seen. Even the coolies had gone home. The railway overbridge presented a deserted sight.

Two or three goods trains were standing on platform No. 3. There was a perfect silence. It was often broken by the whistle of the engine. Some bags and bundles were lying on the platform. Two or three dogs were roaming about. Even they seemed to be very dangerous at that time. I looked again and again in the direction from which the train was to come. I saw dim light. I understood that the train was about to steam in. Suddenly a ticket collecter appeared on the platform. Some passengers who had been dozing in the waiting room also appeared on the scene. The lonely and deserted place came back to life again.

The train reached its destination. My mother was, perhaps, the only passenger who alighted from the train. The passengers got into the train. Tea was in great demand. But there was none at the platform to serve the passengers tea.

The rain did not stop ; we had to spend the night in the waiting room. At about 5 a.m., the rain stopped. We hired a rickshaw and reached home.

How dreadful the scene was !

AN HOUR AT A RAILWAY STATION

A railway platform is a place full of life and activity. We see different scenes on it at different times. In a city like Mumbai, a railway platform appears lively at all the hours of the day. People come to it and go from it constantly.

When a train is about to arrive, a railway platform springs to life. Some persons come quite early and wait on the platform.

Those who are very anxious to receive their friends or relatives, walk to and fro on the platform. Then come vendors of fruits, sweets, toys, books and newspapers. The warning bell rings. Coolies become ready. And then the train is seen coming. It comes slowly. As soon as the train stops, coolies rush into compartments to take out luggage. Soon passengers come out. Those who have come to receive them run to them. Some shake hands and embrace each other. Thus the railway platform becomes a happy meeting ground.

If a leader arrives, people shout cries of “Jai-Hind” and "Long live so and so." He is garlanded by many. Often a minister or a big officer arrives, his subordinates salute him and his friends and relatives meet him. Within ten or fifteen minutes all the passengers leave the platform.

Then coolies and vendors of various things leave the platform. It now becomes a dull and lifeless place. But the scene on the platform at the time of the departure of a train is more lively. Passengers come to the platform and get into compartments. Sometimes you see some passengers quarrelling and even fighting for seats. Vendors are busy selling goods. The tea-vendor is perhaps the busiest man on the platform. You hear cries of passengers for tea, water etc. As the time for the departure of the train comes near, some passengers come hurriedly and get into any compartment.

Some come at the last moment and look nervous and confused. At last the guard whistles. You see a woman weeping because her husband or a relative is perhaps going to a far-off place. You see a child crying while getting separated from its father. In the meanwhile the train whistles and starts. Now there is waving of hands and handkerchiefs. Within a few minutes all persons leave the platform. It now becomes calm. At odd hours when no train is to arrive or to depart, a platform looks dull and lifeless. ..

Many porters can be seen on the platform. They wear red coloured dresses. They carry the luggage of the people on their heads from one platform to another and from train to their vehicles outside the railway station.

Loudspeakers inside the railway station announce the arrival and the departure of trains. They inform the waiting passengers about the number of the platform on which the trains would come.A part of the railway station consists of the booking offices. People queue up in front of the booking windows to buy tickets and to get the reservation done. There are also many information counters from where the information about the trains can be obtained.

As the trains come on to the platform, there is a great hustle and bustle everywhere. People rush to get inside their compartments. They push and jostle each other.
