 Importance Of Festivals Essay English

India is a land of colourful festivals. Since there are a lot of religions practised in India, there are naturally plenty of festivals too. People celebrate their festivals with great pomp and splendour, great joy, zest and gusto.

Hindus celebrate festivals like Holi, Diwali, Gokulashtami, Navratri, Dassera and Ganesh Chaturthi. Different states celebrate different festivals. The start of their new year is also at different times.

In Maharashtra, Gudi Padva is the start of the new year, while in other parts of the country it is the day after Diwali. The major festival of the Christians is Christmas. Muslims have Id and Moharram, while the Parsis celebrate Pateti.

These festivals are certainly important. They are mainly associated with religious beliefs. Christmas is the birthday of Jesus Christ, while Diwali celebrates the return of Sri Ram to Ayodhya. Some festivals like Holi and Baisakhi are associated with the change in seasons, and these are looked forward to, especially in the villages.

Today, many modern people may have forgotten what a particular festival stands for, but they still enjoy it wholeheartedly. A festival provides an opportunity to forget the monotonous, daily routine of life; it serves for a break. People forget their

worries and tensions for a while as they offer prayers to gods or goddesses, wear new clothes and eat delicious food and greet one another. People come out of their homes to enjoy themselves.

Bursting of crackers during Diwali, drenching each other with coloured water during Holi, and dancing the night away during Navratri are ways in which people take a break to enjoy. A festival is also a reason to enjoy sweets and other delicious dishes.

During a festival, the family members staying at different places generally come together, may be for a short time. Long lost cousins meet one another, and greetings are exchanged with friends and relatives. Thus, family ties are strengthened. There is a spirit of joy and cheerfulness in the air.

A festival also helps us to retain our cultural identity. This is more so in cases where people are living away from their home town or their homeland. At such times, these people get together and somehow feel closer to their motherland.

In a country like India where there, is religious and regional diversity, we must be tolerant of the festivals of others, just as we would like others to be tolerant towards our festivals. We must try, as far as possible, to see that others are not disturbed during our celebrations.

We may even join the celebrations of other communities. Only then can India, with its huge variety of festivals, remain strong and united.
