India And United Nations Essay English

India as U.N. member-Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru's India is one of the fifty one original members of the United Nations. Fifty years ago, when India's independence itself seemed as a distant dream India raised her voice for all those, 


who like her were victims of colonialism India denounced colonialism as a threat to peace and as a violation of the UN Charter. India co-sponsored the historic resolution adopted by the UN in 1960 on the granting of independence to colonial countries.


Another issue that India has always fought against is racial discrimination, especially against Apartheid Policy of the South Africa minority white government. India raised this issue in the very first general assembly in 1946. The assembly adopted a resolution condemning racial discrimination as against the UN Charter.


18th session of U.N. General Assembly-In 1963 at the 18th session of the UN general assembly, the Afro-Asian nations secured a resound in success when the assembly adopted a resolution recommending an increase in the membership of the security council from 11 to 15 and thus giving Afro-Asian nations a more durable representation. India cosponsored the resolution and took a leading part in reconciling the demands of various groups-Asian, African and Latin American and bringing them together.


India's genuine concern for international peace has been reflected in her repeated calls for disarmament and complete suspension of all nuclear areas and thermonuclear test, in the general assembly. Infact, the plea for harnessing atomic energy for peaceful and productive purposes was first brought before the UN by India at the initiative of Nehru.


Strong supporter of U.N.-India has also been a consistently strong supporter of the United Nations and a contributor to its operational activities for development. India is now the largest non-OE CD donor to United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Control funding agency of the UN system.


Role of U.N.O.--UN has also played an important role in the development of India. Financial help has been granted to India for the eradication of social, environmental and economic problem like illiteracy, health, poverty, unemployment, child labour, hunger and shortage of food, basic urban services, water supply, sanitation, disaster relief etc.


India has played a pioneering role in the security council. It has taken active part in the peace keeping activities of the UN. It has given asylum to refugees and helped them on several occasions like refuge to Tibetians, when Tibet was annexed by China during the 1950s, and to the migrants from newly created Pakistan during 1947.


With the help of the UN, India has strengthened its agriculture and industrial production. Besides this, India and the UN have cooperated in protection of environment and wildlife and in pollution control which are burning problems of the world.


Today, the United Nations is a conglomeration of almost all the nations of the world. There are 185 countries who are its members. The UN is continuously striving towards international peace, understanding, freedom and development. It aims at bringing together all the countries into a 'global village'.


The UN has successfully avoided the scourge of war which has brought sorrow twice in global history. Environment, in the recent years is also emerging as an agenda before the United Nations.


Conclusion-The United Nations has completed its Golden Jubilee. These fifty years are a giant leap forward towards that pristine and bright star of progress, love affection, humanity, unity and glory. Indeed, a great step towards new horizons and new hopes !
