My Country Essay in English
India is my motherland. It is a land of great variety and diversity. Given the wide differences in the customs, traditions, lifestyle and religions of the people, there is astonishing unity underlying all this diversity.
In this great subcontinent, we find a great variety of physical features, climate, rainfall and other such geographical characteristics. We find dense forests, deserts, high mountain ranges, vast plains and mighty rivers. It also has a long coastline.
India is largely a land of villages. Most of the people live in the villages. Agriculture is the main occupation. India was economically very backward during the British rule. But after Independence, it has made tremendous progress. Today, the country exports a large variety of industrial goods. There is also
a remarkable progress in the fields of transport and communication. India has the world's second largest population. Because of this overpopulation, we have not been able to solve problems like poverty, unemployment and illiteracy.
Every Indian is proud of India's glorious heritage-its ancient civilization and culture. India is the land of Rama and Krishna, Buddha and Mahavir, Ashoka and Shivaji, Kabir and Meera, Kalidas and Tagore, Gandhi and Nehru.
It is the land of the Vedas, the epics, the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. It is the largest democracy in the world. Simplicity, devotion, religious tolerance, charity and hospitality are some of the salient virtues of the Indian people.
After independence, divisive forces have been at work in our country. As a result, we have problems of religious intolerance, communalism and conflicts based on language and caste. These problems, coupled with corruption and political indifference, are threatening the unity and integrity of India.
But we hope that wisdom and good sense will prevail and we will overcome these forces before they cause any damage to our country.
