English Essay on Famines

Famine is a curse of nature. Agricultural countries like India and others often fall a prey to famine.
Causes of famine are not far to seek.Whenever there is scarcity of rain or there is torrential rainfall, there is famine.

Floods in many parts of a country lead to famine. At times locusts destroy crops in large quantities and cause great damage. Sometimes there is shortage of food in a part of the country. This leads to partial famine.

During famine, condition of people becomes miserable. Poor people become the first victims of famine. They are unable to buy food sold at a heavy price. Famine-stricken people migrate to other parts of the country in search of food, but are faced with a grim situation.

In this way, people pine for food and at last become the food of famine. The plight of cattle is still worse. Cattle-owners are unable to buy hay sold at an exorbitant price. Hence, some cattle are starved to death. At the same time pasture-grounds look like the desert of Sahara.

Cattle wander here and there pining for food. Along with scarcity of food, there is scarcity of water. It makes the situation worse. Rivers, lakes and most of the wells become dry. Hence people have to wander in search of water. For them water is carried in trucks and water-tankers to those places.

Of course, now-a-days famine does not kill many persons as it did before. Quick transport facilities help us to carry food to the famine-stricken places quickly. Along with famine, other evils crop up. As food becomes scarce, some persons resort to crimes like theft, robbery etc.

Scarcity of food and water leads to epidemics like cholera, dysentery etc. As soon as a place is famine-stricken, Government rushes to help people. Food-grains are rushed to that place with all speed. Even social workers visit the place and render every possible help.

Common kitchens are opened at different places. Government gives work to those people who have no work. Thus they are employed to dig wells and lakes, to build roads and dams etc. Funds are collected and with their help foodgrains and clothes are distributed among poor persons.

Volunteers help them in many ways. Doctors and nurses go there to treat ill persons. Famine is very common in India. In order to banish it, we should dig more wells, build dams and canals and should grow more and more food.
